Chitra Sen Biography

Chitra Sen is a former Bengali actress who has been active in 1950’s and 1960’s. She worked in both movies and plays and currently she portrays supporting roles. She is active in television also. “Ratrir Tapasya” in 1952 directed by Sushil Majumdar marked her big screen debut. She is a trained classical dancer too and has learnt Manipuri and Bharatnatyam. She has also taken lessons of Hindustani music. She got married to Shyamal Sen in the year 1966 and took a break from the industry. Their only son Kaushik Sen is a famous theatre and television personality. She made his comeback in 1980’s as a character artist and is still active with theatre and television serials. This veteran actress has worked with three generations of film fraternities.

 

She was born as Chitra Mandal on 5 May 1934 in Kolkata, West Bengal to Panchu Gopal Mandal and Arati Mandal. She passed I.A. Exam from Deshbandhu College. She took formal training in Manipuri and Bharatnatyam from Balkrishna Menan and Shakti Nag. She was active in theater before joining film industry. “Ratrir Tapasya” in 1952 was her debut movie. During the same period, she toured many foreign countries with her dance performances. Poland, Moscow, China, Bankok and Hong kong were the countries she visited during the period, 1952-53. As a brilliant stage artist she worked as a paid artist in Lakeranjan Sakha.

 

Joutuk (1958) and Personal Assistant (1959) are her noted film appearances before marriage. After her marriage with Shyamal Sen in the year 1966, she took a long break from acting. Now she is busy with theatre and television. In 2010, she won state award for best stage actress for the role she played in Jalchabi.
