Chithalai Chathanar Biography

Chithalai Chathanar was one of the earliest poets of Tamil literature who authored the epic – Manimekalai, a poem in 30 cantos. It’s the sequel of Silappatikaram, one of The Five Great Epics of Tamil Literature. Though not have solid proofs, it’s widely believed that the work Manimekalai was probably composed by Chithalai Chathanar in the 6th century CE. There are also claims that he was a contemporary of Ilango Adigal, who wrote the prequel of Manimekalai – Silappatikaram. It’s widely believed that he was an expert in both orthodox and heterodox systems of Indian philosophy and that he supported Buddhist ideologies.

Less facts are known about this great poet who wrote one among the 5 epics of Tamil literature. The other four epics are Silappatikaram by Ilango Adigal, Civaka Cintamani authored by Tirutakkatevar, Ramayana of Kambar and Tiruppavai work of the twelve Alvars in praise of the Lord Perumal. Manimekalai is a continuation of Silappatikaram. Though a few historians argue that Manimekalai was written in the second century, it’s widely believed that this epic was composed in 6th century CE. It tells the story of Manimekalai, daughter of Kovalan and Madhavi, and her conversion to a Buddhist saint. The author compared Buddhism with other religions prevailed in south India at the time when it was composed.

Manimekalai is a great work to know about history of Tamil Nadu, apart from art and culture of the period, and influence of Buddhism in south India during that period. Two verses from the Tirukkural were quoted in the epic – Manimekalai. Thus this epic was authored after Thiruvalluvar’s Tirukkural. Chatanar’s name is pronounced as Sa-tha-naar, which literally means mercantilism.
