Chinnaponnu Biography

Chinnaponnu is a folk and playback singer associated with Tamil music. She is also addressed as Chinna Ponnu and Chinnaponnu Kumar. Her musical journey began in the early 1990s, and as of now she has spent nearly three decades in the field of music. "Vazhthuren Vazhthuren" in the hit film Chandramukhi was her first film song, released in 2004. In 2010, she won the Edition Award 2010 for the song "Theeka Theeka" from the film Suriyan Satta Kalloori. In 2012, she marked her Telugu debut through the movie, Bus Stop and the song was Pattuko Pattuko.

 

Chinnaponnu was born in Suranam, a small village in Sivagangai district, Tamil Nadu. Her musical journey began at the age of only 13, when she started singing for temple festivals and churches. After a few years she turned a professional singer, working with different musical troupes. She was a member of the troupe owned by folk artist Kottaisamy, whom she regards as her mentor. Later she got associated with K.A. Gunasekaran, a leading researcher on the folk arts and folk songs of Tamil Nadu, who promoted her performances in different parts of the state.

 

She was an established singer in folk before she joined film industry in 2004. "Vazhthuren Vazhthuren" from Rajinikanth starrer Chandramukhi was her debut song, followed by Theeka Theeka from Suriyan Satta Kalloori, Aakayam Edimughanka from Easa, Thappathaan Theriyum  from Maari, Nakku Mukka from Kadhalil Vizhunthen etc. She has also released solo CDs like Marikkozhunthae in 2005 and Thannane Thannane in 2009. Her troupe was a part of Chennai Sangamam festival in 2010 and 2011. She was also one of the artists featured in the theme song for the World Classical Tamil Conference 2010, composed by A. R. Rahman.
