Chinna Pillai Biography

Chinna Pillai is a woman social activist from the state of Tamil Nadu associated with woman empowerment. She hails from a small village of Madhurai district. She is the most recognizable face of Tamil Nadu's community banking movement. She earned popularity for starting a very successful banking system in the villages in Tamil Nadu. She has always stood aside struggling women of the society, and took efforts for poor people. Even now, she is active in social work, and travels extensively in India and abroad as the leader of the Madurai-based Kalanjiyam Iyakkam,  spreading the message of Indian-style rural empowerment.

 

Belonging to a rural village, her social service has gathered nationwide attention. She has been honoured with several NGOs. She is a recipient of the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar, India's national honours conferred on individual women for their exceptional achievement. She was honoured with this award in 1999 by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee bowed down in respect and touched her feet while presenting the honour. Kalanjiam, microcredit movement started by Chinna Pillai has managed to reach many women living under poverty line.

 

Chinna Pillai hails from Madhurai, Tamil Nadu. She is the leader of the Madurai-based Kalanjiyam Iyakkam. She started the banking system in Madhurai with just Rs. 20 each from ten people. Now this banking organization has four lakh members spread across nine Indian States with Rs. 100 crore in savings and Rs. 200 crore in revolving loans. Now she and her organization inspire people from across the world to take up community banking. She also travels all over the country speaking to rural women about community credits and microfinance.
