Chi. Guru Dutt Biography

Chi. Guru Dutt is a south Indian film celebrity best known as an actor and director. He is associated with Kannada and Tamil films since mid-1980s. His full name is Chitnahalli Guru Dutt and is simply known as Guru Dutt. He is the son of veteran lyricist and dialogue writer of the Kannada film industry, Chi. Udayashankar. Guru Dutt’s grandfather Chi. Sadashivaiah was also a lyricist with Kannada cinema.

 

Chitnahalli Guru Dutt hails from a family with close links to literal world as well as film industry. Both his father and grandfather remained lyricists of Kannada film industry. His father Chi. Udayashankar was a leading dialogue writer of Kannada cinema. Following their footsteps, Chi. Guru Dutt too reached the film industry. He marked his acting debut with Kannada film Anand in 1986. The movie also marked the acting debut of famous actor, Shivrajkumar who went on to become a huge star. Sudha Rani also marked her acting debut with this movie. Lyrics of the movie were penned by his father. The film was commercially successful and ran 38 weeks, and after that Guru Dutt appeared in more than 100 south Indian films, belonging to Kannada and Tamil languages.

 

He marked his Tamil debut with Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal in 1989. The movie was directed by K. Balachander. He was quite regular in Tamil movies throughout 1990s and 2000s. As a film actor he is best known for the supporting role he played in the Tamil movie, Kalaignan (1993) where he shared screen space with Kamal Hassan. He marked his directorial debut with Samara in 1995 and directed 4 more movies, the last one being Aryan in 2014. In 2017 he joined Kannada television through the show, Sanju Mattu Naanu.
