Chetan Chauhan Biography

Chetan Chauhan is a former cricketer of India who played during 1970’s.  He was a right handed batsman for India. He played 40 Test matches for India. He is known as a politician also who has been elected twice to parliament. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh and served during the period 1991-1998. Chauhan was the first Test cricketer to finish his Test career with over 2000 runs but without a century. The second cricketer is Shane Warne from Australia. His partnership with Sunil Gavaskar has given many memorable innings for India during 1970’s. Chauhan had 11 century stands with Gavaskar but one of them was for the fourth wicket.

 

Chauhan was born in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh on 21 July 1947. His family moved to Pune in 1960 where he completed his degree course in Wadia College. He received coaching from former Maharashtra player Kamal Bhandarkar. Chauhan represented Puna University in the Rohinton Baria trophy in 1966–67 where he got selected to West Zone for the interzonal Vizzy Trophy. He managed to get one century and two half century from the matches. His opening partner in the second innings was Sunil Gavaskar. Later for Indian team too, together they have played many match-winning innings. Success in Vizag trophy gave him a permanent position in Maharashtra Ranji team. His 103 against South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final gave him selection to National team.

 

Chauhan made his Test debut against New Zealand at Mumbai on 25 September 1969. But his failure resulted in his drop from the team and was able to gain a permanent position in National team only after three years when he scored 873 runs in the 1972–73 Ranji season for Maharashtra. He played 40 matches for the team where he scored a total of 2084 runs. His top score was 97. He played his last innings 13 March 1981 against New Zealand. He has also played 7 ODI for India.
