Chandulal Madhavlal Trivedi Biography

Sir Chandulal Madhavlal Trivedi was an Indian administrator and civil servant from Madhya Pradesh. He was a prominent figure in public affairs, soon after Indian independence. He was the first Indian governor of the state of Punjab after 1947. When Andhra Pradesh was formed in 1953, he served as its first governor too, serving the position till 1957. For his outstanding contributions to the field of Public Affairs, government of India honoured him with the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in the year 1956. He passed away on 15 March 1980, aged 86.

 

Trivedi was born in Bombay Presidency of British India. His birth place Kapadvanj in Kaira (now known as Kheda) District is currently a part of state of Gujarat. He completed his graduation in Bombay, and later moved to Oxford, US for higher studies. He attended Indian Civil Service exams in 1916. Once he returned from US, he joined Indian Civil Service in 1917. He first served in the Central Provinces as an assistant commissioner. During the British rule, he served many prominent positions as an administrator. He served as additional secretary (war) with the central government, followed by full-time secretary during the Second World War.

 

After the end of war, he was appointed as Governor of Orissa by British government in 1945. He was the first Indian and last British-appointed Governor of Odisha. He formally served this position till 14th August, 1947, just a day before Indian independence was officially declared. On the same day, he was appointed the first Indian governor of the new Indian province of East Punjab. This place now forms a part of Haryana. Trivedi was the first Governor of the renamed state of Punjab (1950-1953) and also Andhra Pradesh (1953-1957). He took rest from his political life towards the end of his later and spent his last days in his hometown with his family.
