Chandrika Prasad Srivastava Biography

Chandrika Prasad Srivastava, shortly called C. P. Srivastava was a civil servant, diplomat and administrator who served as joint secretary to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was married to Nirmala Srivastava, the spiritual guru and founder of meditation technique, Sahaya Yoga. Both his in-laws were intellectuals and great freedom fighters. He died in Italy at the age of 93 in 2013, two years after the death of his wife. He was elected as IMO Secretary-General for the first time in 1974 and served three successive four-year terms until his retirement in 1989. He spent his last years in Italy. He is a recipient of Padma Bhushan in 1972 and Padma Vibhushan in 2009 in recognition to his contributions to Indian Administrative service.

 

He was born in UP in 1920 and educated from Lucknow. After Post-graduation he took LLB and later joined Indian Administrative Service. A few days before Indian independence he married Nirmala Srivastava. During his tenure as an IAS officer of India, he served as joint secretary to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri during 1964–1966. Later he became the first chief executive of the Shipping Corporation of India, before moving to London as IMO Secretary-General in 1974. He continued the position till 1989. During this time he gave significant contributions to the establishment of International Maritime Academy in Italy, and the International Maritime Law Institute in Malta.

 

In 1987 he was named an honorary graduate by the University of Wales. He was also a recipient of two honorary doctorates, apart from numerous honours including Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. Married to Nirmala Srivastava, the founder of Sahaja Yoga, he too practiced this meditation. He was fondly called 'Papaji' or 'Sir C.P.' within the movement. In 1991, he received the International Maritime Prize.
