Chandrashekhar Singh (chief Minister) Biography

Chandrashekhar Singh was a prominent Congress leader from Bihar who served as Chief Minister during the period - August 1983 to March 1985. He was a prominent politician in state politics and a popular leader. A noted parliamentarian too, he has served as a cabinet minister under the ministry of both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in the 1980s. He was serving as Union Minister of Petroleum while he passed away in 1986. He died at AIIMS, Delhi where he was undergoing the treatment of cancer. Singh is a 5-time parliamentarian. In his birth place Jamai, a museum was renamed after him.

 

He was born in Malaypur of Jamui district, Bihar on 17 August 1927. He got actively involved with state politics after Indian independence and formation of states. He was elected to the first Bihar Assembly in 1952, and retained his MLA chair till 1980 before he got involved with national level politics. In 1980 he was invited to National level politics by Indira Gandhi. Thus he contested to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1980 from Banka constituency. He won the elections and when Indira Gandhi came back to power he was induced to cabinet.

 

In 1983 Indira Gandhi asked him to become the chief minister of Bihar. Thus he took oath as Chief Minister of Bihar on 14 August 1983. But after two years he was invited to central cabinet by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Thus he resigned his power as Chief Minister and joined Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet where he was given the portfolio, Petroleum. But he died the following year. He was diagnosed with cancer.
