Chandrani Murmu Biography

Chandrani Murmu is the youngest parliamentarian of world’s largest democratic nation – India. She created history in 2019 general elections when she got elected to Lok Sabha as a candidate of Biju Janata Dal from the Keonjhar seat in Odisha at the age of 25. The record was previously held by Dushyant Chautala of Jannayak Janta Party in 16th Lok Sabha, and he joined Lok Sabha at the age of 26 from Hisar Lok Sabha seat in 2014. The youngest MP of India ever, she is also a tribal woman, thus creating history. The demands of the tribals, women, and the youth gave her the major support during election campaigns. She wants to improve education facilities as well as industrial sector of her constituency, as an elected candidate.

 

Chandrani Murmu hails from Tikargumura village of Odisha. She doesn’t own any political background, and none of her family members are involved with politics. She completed her Bachelors in Technology from the Siksha O Anusandhan University in Bhubaneswar in 2017. When she stood as the contestant of Biju Janata Dal party in Lok Sabha elections, Chandrani was amongst the top three elected candidates with the least recorded assets, with only 3.40 lakhs rupees annually.

 

She is fondly called “the daughter of the village” by the residents of the rural region, and her educational background and communication skills made her a popular young dalit leader among the public. She holds a B. Tech degree, and was in search of a government job when her political entry happened unexpectedly. This year Odisha created history by bagging 7 out of the 21 seats by women contestants, thus making it to 33%. She is called “Hira” or “Chandu” at home.
