Chandrakant Bakshi Biography

Chandrakant Bakshi was a noted writer associated with Gujarati literature. He was a noted litterer, columnist and historian. His language was mix-up of Gujarati and Urdu words and he contributed to literature in the form of 26 novels and 15 collections of short stories. He authored a total of 178 books, including 17 books on history and culture, 8 travelogues and two plays. Bakshinama – is his autobiography work and has written numerous columns for many leading newspapers. His works have been translated to many Indian languages and English. This writer is also addressed by the names - Bakshi and Bakshibabu.

 

Though known as a prolific writer, his writings have invited a few controversies as well. His short story Kutti was banned by Government of Gujarat and the arrest warrant was issued. But later he fought the case and Government had to withdraw all the charges against him. His open criticism of Bal Thackeray in a newspaper column also bought him to limelight. He never apologized, though he was asked to do so. Through his works, he sharply criticized people whom he disliked. He also refused to accept literal prizes, and was considered ‘Angry young thinker’ of Gujarati literature.

 

He was born into a Gujarati Jain family in the year 1932. He was born in Palanpur. Though brought up in a Jain family, he mocked vegetarianism. He was married to Bakula. Bakula passed away four years before his death. He completed MA in History and Bachelor of Laws, and later worked in textile business for 12 years. It was during this time when he wrote his first short story - Makan Nu Bhut. His first book - Padgha Doobi Gaya was published in 1957.

 

After spending 12 years in textile business, he moved to Mumbai in 1969, and started his career as a teacher. He retired as principal of Mitabai College in 1982. Served as a senate member of Bombay University, he served as the Sheriff of Mumbai in the 1999.
