Chandrahasan Biography

Chandrahasan was a film producer and actor associated with Tamil film industry. He was the elder brother of famous actor & filmmaker, Kamal Hassan, and younger brother to actor Charuhasan. Actress Suhasini Maniratnam is his niece. His daughter Anu Hassan is a film actress and TV host, who presented the most popular celebrity talk show Koffee with Anu on the Tamil channel Vijay for three seasons. Chandrahasan portrayed the father of Kamal Haasan's character in Raja Paarvai (1981), and also appeared in Suhasini Maniratnam's directorial debut Indira in 1995. His movie - Appathava Aataiya Potutanga made by debutant director Stephen was released posthumously where he played the lead role. He passed away in 2017.

 

Chandrahasan was born in 1934 in Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu to Srinivasan and Rajalakshmi. He had three siblings. He had one elder brother – Charuhassan and younger brother – Kamal Hassan, and both are prominent names in Tamil film industry. Actresses Suhasini, Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan are his nieces. His younger sister, Nalini Raghuram is a classical dancer. During younger days, Chandrahasan wanted to become a singer, but later pursued as lawyer. He had a deep bonding with his younger brother, Kamal Hassan, one of the most talented filmmakers and actors of Indian cinema. In fact, when Kamal’s Vishwaroopam faced many problems for release, Chandrahasan played a pivot role in mediating with the opposition.

 

As an actor, Chandrahasan has appeared in only lesser number of films, but had an active career as film producer, in association with Raaj Kamal Films International. Raja Paarvai starring Kamal Hassan in lead role was the first film of this banner. Chandrahasan played his father’s role in the film. He has also acted in Kamal Hassan’s Hey Ram and Suhasini’s Indira. His first film in lead role Appathava Aataiya Potutanga has completed its production work, though not released yet. He died a cardiac arrest in London aged 82 last year.
