Chandradhar Sharma Guleri Biography

Chandradhar Sharma Guleri was an Indian writer who wrote in Hindi, Sanskrit, Prakrit and Pali languages. He was a well-known scholar of all these languages too. He lived during the period, 1883–1922. He is credited to writing first short story in Hindi literature - Usne Kaha Tha, first published in 1915. The movie was later made on silver screen with the same title in Hindi. His stories have been adapted for stage plays too. His effort to preserve the Jantar Mantar Observatory in Jaipur is also worth mentioning here.

 

Chandradhar Sharma was born in 1883 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He had routes in Himachal Pradesh, with his father being a native of Guleri village. Later he took ‘Guleri’ tag and added to his name as suffix. Pandit was described as a versatile genius in the period which lived, and he had a short life of only 39 years. Within this short life span, he gave amazing contributions to literature, as a writer and scholar. He completed his graduation from Allahabad University, and later entered into teaching profession. He served as the Department head of Sanskrit at Mayo College, Ajmer, and in 1922 joined Banaras Hindu University.

 

He published the first short story in 1915 titled Usne Kaha Tha. Purani Hindi, Guleri Rachnavali, Guleri Katha Kahani Samagra, Pandit Chandradhar Sharma Guleri aur unki kavitayen, Guleri patra-sahitya:antahsakshya dvara parichaya etc are some of the works related to Guleri, and a few of his works as well. Most of these works were published posthumously, mostly in 1980s and 1990s. Articles on his works and sampling of writings were published by Dr. Manoharlal in 1984, and the book was titled Guleri Sahityalok.
