Chandan Dass Biography

Chandan Dass is a well-known ghazal singer. His name is also pronounced as Chandan Das. He has been quite popular with ghazal shows on Doordarshan in the 1980s, and Dass is a well-known ghazal singer at live concerts in the past three decades or so. He regularly performed in Sugam Sangeet on Doordarshan in the 1980s along with Penaz Masani, and a few more singers. He is a discovery of noted ghazal singer Talat Aziz, who promoted him in the early 1980s. Now also Chandan is quite popular with his ghazal concerts. His son Namit Das is a noted Bollywood actor and singer. His brother-in-law Jaidev Kumar is a famous Punjabi music director.

 

Dass was born in Delhi on 12 March 1956. He started singing ghazals from the age of eight. He started formal lessons in ghazals from Ustad Moosa Khan. He also learnt Hindustani music from Pandit Mani Prasad from the Kirana Gharana. Yet he chose ghazal singing over Hindustani music to pursue a career. He gained foot in the industry in the early 1980s, when stalwarts of Ghazal like Jagjit Singh, Pankaj Udhas etc ruled the roost. It was a time when ghazal started becoming popular among the masses. Dass created a niche of his own through his renditions and a created a fan base as well.

 

He was discovered and introduced him to Music India Ltd by Talak Aziz, well known ghazal singer, and thus his debut album - Introducing ... Chandan Dass got released in 1980. The album was well received and it gave him encouragement to stay in the same field. He is deeply influenced by Mehdi Hassan, whom he regards as the father of ghazals. Kitne Hi Rang, Ghazal Usne Chhedi, Inayat, Deewangi etc are some of his popular ghazal albums.
