C. S. Jayaraman Biography

C. S. Jayaraman was a noted actor, music director and a successful playback singer of Tamil during the golden era of music. He was active in the industry from 1940’s to 1970’s. He has rendered his voice for a few Kannada songs as well. He got opportunity to work with several leading music directors of the time like - R. Sudharsanam, G. Govindarajulu Naidu, Viswanathan Ramamoorthy, T. M. Ibrahim, S. Rajeswara Rao, K. V. Mahadevan, S. M. Subbaiah Naidu, G. Ramanathan and T. R. Pappa. He is the brother-in-law of prominent politician and ex-chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi. Jayaraman has been instrumental in grooming the film career of Karunanidhi from a good script writer to the senior script writer.

 

Jayaraman was born in Chidambaram and his father was a noted traditional Tamil music vocalist Sundaram Pillai. His birth date is still unknown and is assumed to be around 1917. He began his acting career through Tamil movies in the year 1934 at a time when devotional movies were made huge in number. He acted in movies like Krishna Leela (1934), Bhakta Duruvan (1935), Nalla Thangaal (1935), Leelavathi Sulochana (1936), Izhantha Kaadhal (1941), Poompaavai (1944) and Krishna Bhakthi (1948).

 

He has also worked as music director for the movies - Udayanan Vaasavathatha (1946) and Ratha Kanneer (1954). He was the co-music director of Vijayakumari (1950) and Krishna Vijayam (1950). As a singer, he sung for Sivaji Ganesan for his debut movie – Parasakthi (1952). The songs are Desam Gnanam Kalvi, Kaa Kaa Kaa and Nenjil Porukkuthillaiyae. Apart from Sivaji, he has rendered his voice for M. G. R, S. S. Rajendran, M. R. Radha and M. K. Radha.
