C. P. John Biography

C. P. John is a politician, activist, social worker and writer from Kunnamkulam, Thrissur. His full name is Cheruvathoor Poulose John. He currently serves as the General Secretary of the Communist Marxist Party (CMP). He is one of the co-founders of the party founded in the year 1987. He also serves as Member of the Kerala State Planning Board with responsibility for agriculture, labour, SC/ST/OBC welfare and decentralised planning.

John hails from Kunnamkulam, in the outskirts of Thrissur, near to Guruvayur. He was born on 22 April 1957. His father, CI Poulose was an Assistant Director of the Department of Agriculture in Central Province and his mother Rosa Poulose retired as a school headmistress. She served as the headmistress of Kunnamkulam Girls’ High School and Pazhani Girls High School. Since school days, John got active in students’ politics. In the 1970s he also became a prominent leader during his college years. It happened soon after the Emergency period declared in 1975. He served as All India Vice President of the Student Federation of India during the period, 1983-1986.

With the formation of Communist Marxist Party (CMP) in the year 1987, he served as the secretary of the political party, which worked for the welfare of the society and women empowerment. He was one of the co-founders of the party. He served as the Director of the Kudumbashree Mission from 2001-2006, and many more elite positions related to human welfare. He also served two terms on the Kerala State Planning Board - 2001-2006 & 2011-2016. He played a pivot role in many reformations took place in the sector during his tenure. He is married to Aruna Varkey, a Law Officer at Kerala State Cooperative Bank since 1985, and the couple has two daughters.
