C. Alvares Biography

C. Alvares was a legendary Goan tiatrist, film actor, producer and director who lived in the 20th century. His real name is Celestino Santana Francisco Alvares and he lived in Goa during the period, 1 August 1920 – 28 February 1999. He specialised in composing and singing poignant duets on various social issues, and was nicknamed ‘King of Duets’. Alvares was a popular Konkani film actor too, best known for his performances in Amchem Noxib, Nirmon, Mhoji Ghorkarn, Bhuierantlo Munis and Uddta to Buddta. Nirmon remains his most memorable film, for which he received best actor award. He has always prompted ladies to appear on stage and he was one of the early artists to do so.

 

Celestino Santana Francisco Alvares was born on 1 August 1920 in Saligao, Goa. He was born into a in a Catholic family nicknamed fokanneager (comedians). His debut on the tiatr stage happened at the age of seven when he sang a comic song taught by his cousin. Since then his career spanned to more than 60 years. Later Alvares moved to Mumbai in search of livelihood. His cousin Champion Alvares introduced him on the tiatr stage in his own drama Bhattkar Goencho ani Cuzner Bombaimcho. Alvares sang 5 songs and enthralled the audience, thus marking a new beginning of his career.

 

He has written 107 tiatrs besides acting in thousands of tiatrs in a career spanning to six decades, where he entertained audience with his stage appearance. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest contributors to Konkani stage. He also produced the Konkani film Faxi Mogachi. He always encouraged ladies to come up on the stage and create individuality and earn a reputation of their own. Alvares’ professional career began composing duets and started singing with famed female impersonators of the Konkani stage like Remmie Colaco, Romaldo D’Souza, Vincent de Saligao, Star of Arossim, Andrew, etc. That’s why he encouraged ladies to perform on stage.
