Burhaan Kinu Biography

Burhaan Kinu is a photojournalist from Kashmir based in Delhi. Currently he is a staff photojournalist of Hindustan Times. He is best known for his photograph of Holi celebration in 2013, which was adjusted by Huffington Post among the 52 most breathtaking photos across the globe. His photographic coverage of the aftermath of the 2015 Dadri mob lynching earned him Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award 2015, the most prestigious journalism award in India. His works have been published in different forms of media publications across the globe.

 

Burhaan was born in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir on 24 April 1986. He started his professional career working with local dailies of Kashmir since 2006. In 2012 he moved to Delhi, and from there on he earned success and acclaim for his work as a photojournalist.  Through his lens he focuses and captures the conflicted spaces of Kashmir region, as well as the beautiful spaces and social life of same region. He was working with Kashmir Observer in Srinagar till 2012 before he moved to Delhi for better opportunities.

 

He joined Hindustan Times on a staff position in New Delhi in 2012. Throughout his career he has taken risk to capture the conflicted areas and scenes across North India and East, such as the conflict between Rengma Naga and Karbi tribes, and Mizo and Bru, refugee camps in Nagaland and Assam and also Northeast India. In fact Burhaan got trapped in Srinagar once, while he was covering an encounter between Indian Armed Forces and Militia in 2010. Some of his noted assignments include - 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, 2014 Badaun gang rape allegations, 2015 Dadri mob lynching, May 2015 Nepal earthquake etc.
