Brammarajan Biography

Brammarajan is an eminent writer belonging to Tamil literature and a pioneer in the field of Neo-Thamizh poetry. He has been associated with the field of Neo-Thamizh Poetry for nearly 4 decades since 1980s. He is also a proficient translator, essayist, critic and editor. Brammarajan is the pseudonym of A. Rajaram. Apart from poetry, he has done works on literary criticism and a few translation works from English such as Bertolt Brecht, Borges Kathaigal and Calvino Kathaigal. Ulagkkavithai and Tharkala Naveena Ulgakkavithai are his anthology works and Ezra Pound and Nadodi Manam – his works on literary criticism. Pathinainthu iroppiya naveenavaathigal is his celebrated work in Tamil literature.

A. Rajaram was born on 24 April 1953 into a family of farmers in Salem. He schooled from Bharathi Vidhyalaya High School and completed graduation in English from Government Arts College, both from Salem. He later completed Master’s in English Language and Literature from Annamalai University with first rank and gold medal. He started his professional career as a college lecturer, joining as Assistant Professor of English in a government college. Since then he has taught English in different government colleges of Tamil Nadu. Apart from his career as a writer and professor, he also owns a stint as a painter.

His literary career began when he worked as an assistant in the publication of a local magazine. He began with translation works, translating the works of European authors to Tamil. His first poetry collection Arindha Nirandharam was published in the year 1980. Throughout 1980s he wrote poetry with Neo-Thamizh as theme, creating a niche of his own. As a writer, he earned instant fame after publishing Pathinainthu iroppiya naveenavaathigal in 1998, which introduced many European masters of fiction to Tamil.
