Brajanath Sarma Biography

Brajanath Sarma, also known as Natyacharjya was a pioneer in the field of Assam theatre. Barjita, Urvashi and Manumati are his noted plays. He was a famous playwright, stage actor and a pioneer of Mobile Theater of Assam. He formed the Kohinoor Opera Party, the first mobile theatre group of Assam. The group was most active in the decades of 1920s and 1930s. In 1931, Brajanath Sarma, and Phani Sarma introduced female actresses for the first time in the Kohinoor Opera dramas. It was one of the great revolutions of Indian theatre, mostly Assam theatre.

 

He was born in the village Shila in Barpeta District of Assam in 1894. Padmanath and Nareswari were his parents. After schooling, though he enrolled at Tarinipriya Chatuspathy of Gouripur for higher studies, he left studies. He joined British Army and participated in World War First. During this period he met Englishman named George who inspired him to join the field of acting and theatre. He joined West Bengal Dramatic Club and was active during the period 1917 to 1921. He returned to hometown where he started his own theatre troupe. Kohinoor Opera party was formed in 1930, after two of his troupes were formed and dissolved.

 

Brajanath Sarma is regarded as a pioneer in theatre and acting. Barjita, Manomati, Patita, Karuna and Urbashi are his noted plays and Biplobi – his autobiographical work. In 1936 he dissolved Kohinoor Opera party to join freedom struggle movement. He actively participated in Quit India Movement and got jailed too. After Indian independence he joined Socialist Party and was active in politics for a while. Again he returned back to theatre.
