Brahmdeo Ram Pandit Biography

Brahmdeo Ram Pandit is a well-known artist, best known as a studio potter and craftsman. An expertise in making pottery, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2013 for his contributions towards the field of art. He is also a recipient of countless awards and honours including The All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Award, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay Award, Government of Maharashtra State Award, Shilp Guru etc. He played a magnificent role in popularizing ceramic art forms among the masses. Rashtrapati Bhavan has displayed five of his creations in its art gallery, and some of Pandit’s works are widely regarded among the best pottery works across the world.

 

Brahmdeo Ram Pandit hails from Bihar. He was born in a poor family in Navada, on 2 March 1949. His father’s name is Ram Pandit, who was a pottery maker and Brahmdeo learnt the art of pottery from his father. He joined Sekho Devra Ashram in Kawakole, Navada for formal training in pottery making and completed the course in 1969. He received a scholarship on which he got opportunity to study at Central Village Pottery Institute in Belgium, Karnataka. He is married to Devki Pandit, a potter and has two children.

 

His professional career began in 1970 soon after completing his course from Central Village Pottery Institute, and he started off as an apprentice, at Aaj Studio, under the tutelage of Laxman R. Ajgaonkar. The following year he enrolled at J. J. School of Art, Mumbai to study clay modelling and sculpture for next 6 years. He also worked as faculty Sophia College Polytechnic, Mumbai during this time. He continued his studies at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, followed by Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore for next 10 years.

 

He continued teaching students at various institutions and his students fondly called him Panditji. Pandit founded Pandit Art Ceramic in 1981 in Thane, Maharashtra for the mass production of his creations. It produces around 300 pots a day, and a favourite choice among bonsai growers and ikebana artists. Over the years he has also done several solo exhibitions, notably at Jehangir Art Gallery and Sophia College Art Gallery.
