Bishnu Prasad Rava Biography

Bishnu Prasad Rava, popularly known as Kala Guru was a doyen of Arts from Assam. He was a multifaceted artist and revolutionary singer. He is also known as a painter, dancer, music composer and dramatist. He has served as the president of IPTA. He has also participated in Indian freedom struggle. He was also a brilliant academician and researcher. His noted works include - Bano Kobang, Mising Coneng, Sonpahi, Axomiya Kristir Samuh Abhash and Atit Axom. His slogan "Haal Jaar Maati Taar" was very famous.

 

Bishnu Prasad Rava was born in Dhaka on 31 January 1909 as the son of Sardar Bahadur Gopal Chandra Das. He spent his childhood in Dhaka in Bengali medium. Later his family shifted permanently to Tezpur, Assam, where he continued his education. He completed his schooling at Tezpur Government High School and higher education was completed in Kolkata. He completed ISC exam from St. Paul's Cathedral Mission College and degree from Surendranath College. He played an active role in Indian freedom struggle movement and was attracted to Communist Party of India. After the split of communist party, he joined the Revolutionary Communist Party of India.

 

In 1951, he became the president of the Assam branch of Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). He was deeply interested in the upliftment and liberation of the weaker section of society and such thoughts were well reflected in his works too. According to him, real freedom means - freedom from capitalism, poverty and wage-slavery. His slogan was "Haal Jaar Maati Taar" means "those who cultivate should own the land".

 

He has high influence on the music of Assam also. Most cultural music competitions of Assam include a segment called Bishnu Rava Sangeet related to his compositions and lyrics. He was an established singer also. Hundreds of his compositions are collectively called Bishnu Rava Sangeet. His stage plays are also famous. He has also been associated with movies as an actor, singer and director.
