Bisahu Das Mahant Biography

Bisahu Das Mahant was a prominent politician from Madhya Pradesh associated with state politics. He was an influential Congress leader of Madhya Pradesh. His son Charan Das Mahant is a prominent congress leader in National level politics and has served as a cabinet minister under Manmohan Singh. He was one of the most successful MLAs of Madhya Pradesh. He got elected to state assembly for the first time in 1952, and since then he has never faced a defeat. He has served as an MLA of the state for 6 terms till his death in 1978. He was only 54 years old then, and was at his career peak. He was bedridden for a long time and died due to Cardiac arrest.

 

Bisahu Das Mahant was born in Saragaon in the Jangir Champa District of Chhattisgarh. He was born into an agricultural family. Bisahu was interested in agriculture and his son Charan Das Mahant too was an agriculturalist, who served as Minister of State (Agriculture). Born into a family of farmers without any political background, since his debut in state politics in 1952 he was one of the most influential leaders from Madhya Pradesh. He was also involved with struggle against British since 1942, as the government rejected his scholarship.

 

He was married to Janki Devi and the couple had two sons and four daughters. Janki was a homemaker. One among his children, Dr. Charan Das Mahant followed his path and carried forward the reputation earned by his father, and also carried it to national level as well. Apart from serving as an MLA six terms since 1952, he also served as a cabinet minister. He was also a writer and agriculturist.
