Birendra Kumar Bhuyan Biography

Birendra Kumar Bhuyan was a famous writer, poet and lyricist from Nilapada, Odisha. He is known for his contributions towards Odia literature as well as cinema. Hati O Maduka Katha, Kete Jati Fala, Gadia Ganga, Kete Je Pakhi, Kete Je Fula, Bagala Baguli, Kunmuni, Lakhmi Nandan, Dhanya Se Jhhia, Bana Raijara Katha and Bhabana ra swara are his published works. Bhabana ra swara was published after his death in 1991, aged 57. Many of his works and songs have received multiple awards, and many of his songs like "Eka K eKa", Jataka Padichhi Raja Jataka","Kalasha Upare Amba Dalia Gori Kanyaku Bara Kalia", "Joutuka Deiparibini"  etc are very popular.

Birendra Kumar Bhuyan was born on 25 July 1933 in Nilapada village, Odisha. Balaram Bhuyan and Sulochana Devi are his parents. His village was a sub-division in the district of Cuttack when he was born in 1933 during British rule. He was married to Shubhashini Bhuyan in 1956, and the couple had two sons and three daughters. His aunt Singha Jhia Sushila was a freedom fighter. Since young, Birendra wanted to do something worth for the people of Odisha, and wanted to serve them. He was deeply inspired from his mother. He lost his father at the age of 13. He had to swim every day to reach school, as there was no bridge connecting his village and school, and a tributary of the river of Mahanadi was flowing in between.

After his father’s death, he discontinued his studies and left home. He wanted to become a monk, and travelled to the pilgrim cities like Kashi, Brindavan and Mathura during his teens. He met with a monk at Mathura, who advised him to focus on his life and he returned back and completed his education. After graduation, he joined service in government sector of Odisha in the field of administration. He started writing from 1951, and in the next 40 years till his death, he gave some notable works to Odia literature.
