Birender Singh Biography

Chaudhary Birender Singh Dumerkha is shortly called Birender Singh in Indian politics. A member of Bharatiya Janata Party since 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he had a long term association of 42 years with Indian National Congress. He currently serves as Union Minister of Steel in Modi’s cabinet. He previously served as Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Sanitation & Drinking Water, before his portfolio was changed in 2016. His grandfather Sir Chhotu Ram was an iconic Jat and peasant leader in British India before Partition.

Chaudhary Birender Singh Dumerkhan was born on 30 March 1946 in a very influential family of Chhotu Ram, known for social service. He completed his graduation and LLB degrees before he joined active politics, working closely with Indian National Congress. In the 1960s, he was also associated with sports, predominantly cricket, and played for university team. In the year 1970, he married Prem Lata Singh. Singh contested his first election in 1972, and became the Chairman, Block Samiti Uchana. He served the term of 5 years, and then he contested state assembly elections in 1977. He won the elections by a narrow margin. But his victory got noticed, as it was one of the major wins of Congress soon after public’s strong resistance to politics following Emergency period in national level politics.

After that he had a long term association with Indian National Congress till 2014. A 5-times MLA from the state who got elected to Haryana state legislative assembly, he also served as a state cabinet minister three times. He also served three terms in Lok Sabha. He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1984 in Congress ticket, followed by Rajya Sabha MP in 2010, but resigned the position in 2014 to join BJP. He got elected to Lok Sabha, and also earned a position in Modi’s cabinet.
