Biplab Kumar Deb Biography

Biplab Kumar Deb is an Indian politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party, who has been recently elected as the chief minister of Tripura, ending the 25-year reign of Communist Party of India in the state. He took oath as the 10th Chief Minister of Tripura on 9 March, 2018. Formerly he served as the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2016. The 48-year old politician won the Banamalipur assembly seat by a margin of 9,700 votes by defeating Left Front's Amol Chokroborty. The seat was previously held by Indian national Congress.

Biplab Deb was born into a middle-class family on 25 November 1969 in Rajdhar Nagar village in Gomati district of Tripura. His parents are of Bangladesh origin. Since childhood days, young Deb’s life was spent in his hometown in Tripura. Deb graduated from Tripura's Udaipur College in 1999 and later shifted to Delhi for pursuing Master’s degree. During these years, he joined the RSS, where he was a volunteer for 16 years, training under prominent leaders like Gobinda Acharya and Krishnagopal Sharma. After 15 years he returned to his hometown, where he began with his political career. Biplab Kumar Deb is married to Neeti Deb and has two children.

Biplab Deb has been a longtime RSS volunteer. In a poll last year, the party found out that Biplab Kumar Deb was more popular in the state than Manik Sarkar, and was immediately replaced as state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He replaced Sudhindra Dasgupta, to become the youngest BJP chief of the state. For the state assembly elections this year, he contested from Banamalipur assembly seat and won by a margin of 9,700 votes. He took oath as the 10th Chief Minister of Tripura on 9 March, 2018, and the second youngest Chief Minister of India at present after Maharasthra's Devendra Fadnavis.
