Bindiya Goswami Biography

Bindiya Goswami is a former actress of Bollywood who was busy during 70’s and 80’s. She is the wife of Bollywood director J.P.Dutta who directed patriotic movies like Border, LOC Kargil and Refugee. Formally she had been married with actor Vinod Mehra, who has frequently been paired with her during 70’s. Now she is a fashion designer too, who designs costumes for heroines in her husband’s movies. She has designed costumes for heroines like Kareena and Rani Mukherjee for these movies. As an actress, her most memorable movie is classic comedy of yesterday’s – Golmaal. She was paired opposite Amol Palekar in this movie and R.D. Burman song ‘Aanewala pal jaanewala hai’ pictured on Amol Palekar and herself is still popular. She has a string of 12 movies with Vinod Mehra, of which Dada, Khoobsurat, Yeh rishte na tootte, Vishaal, Mujhe shakthi do, Laalach, Jaandar, Chor police, Sansani, Dial 100, Khoon kharaba and Khud daar are remembered most.

Bindiya’s entry to Bollywood was just co-incidental. When she attended a party, she was noticed by Hema Malini’s mother. She felt that she had close resemblance with her daughter. She was just 14 years that time. Hema Malini’s mother recommended her to different directors and thus Bollywood doors were opened to her. She debut Bollywood with Jeevan Jyothi, opposite Vijay Arora. Vijay was on the verge of a flop despite being success with movies like Yaadom ki baarat. This movie too bombed at box office. Then she got a few opportunities like Khatta meeta and Prem vivah, directed by Basu chatterjee. Both these movies became successful and her acting was appreciated. During late 70’s her pairing with Vinod Mehra was also noted whom she married later. But they parted due to personal indifferences too.

Till now, Golmaal directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee is regarded as the most successful movie of Bindiya. She also starred opposite Shashi Kapoor in huge budget movie Shaan of 1980. The movie was moderate success only and credits went to its leading stars only – Big B, Shashi Kapoor and Parveen Babi. Her other movies include – Khud daar, Amne samne, Hotel, Bandish and Khaandan.
