Bindhyabasini Devi Biography

Bindhyabasini Devi was an Indian folk musician and singer from the state of Bihar. She was the founder of the musical academy named Vindhya Kala Mandir, which aimed at promoting folk music. Government of India awarded her the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974, and Sangeet Natak Akademi awarded her in 1991. She also received Akademi Fellowship in 2006. She was also a recipient of Ahilya Bai Award given by Government of Madhya Pradesh. Bindhyavasini Devi died at her Kankarbagh residence at Patna on 18 April 2006, aged 86. She was survived by three children. She was an accomplished performer in Maithili, Bhojpuri and Magahi dialects and she owned a huge fan too.

 

Bindhyabasini Devi was born in Muzzafarpur, Bihar. She received her training in music from Shri Sahadeveshwar Verma and Shri Kshitish Chandra Verma. Later she had a long and successful career in the folk music of Bihar. Over the years she has acquired a large repertoire of traditional songs in Maithili, Bhojpuri and Magahi. She has served as Producer of Folk Music at All India Radio, Patna, apart from heading Vindhya Kala Mandir, an organization started by her.

 

She founded Vindhya Kala Mandir in the aim to promote folk music and art, and for the past 55 years or so, it is functioning. She has also sung for movies, though quite a few. Chhote Dulha Ke, in a movie, Vivah Geet is one among her popular film songs. Many of her songs are now available in CD format. She was married to Shedeveshvar Chandra Verma and had two sons and a daughter. Santosh Kumar Sinha and Sudhir Kumar Sinha are her sons and Pushparani Madhu is her daughter.
