Bina Das Biography

Bina Das was an Indian revolutionary, freedom fighter and nationalist from Bengal. She actively participated in the Quit India movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and also joined the "Jugantar" revolutionary club. She was a member of Indian National Congress too. By her early 20s itself she became a powerful young revolutionary who left a mark in the freedom struggle movement of India. Yet many others, she remains one unsung hero of Indian independence and her services are long forgotten. She lived during the period, 24 August 1911 - 26 December 1986. Most sadly her body was found in a decomposed state and it took one month to identify her identity. For her efforts in social service, government of India honoured her with Padma Shri award in 1960.

 

Bina Das was born on 24 August 1911 in Krishnanagar, Bengal Provinces in British India. most of her family members were social workers, great patriots and freedom fighters. Her father Beni Madhab Das was a Bengali scholar, a renowned teacher and a great patriot of India. Her mother Sarala Devi was a social worker. Her elder sister Kalyani Das was also a freedom fighter. Bina was a friend of well-known freedom fighter Suhasini Ganguly. She completed her college education from Bethune College.

 

She was a member of “Jugantar" revolutionary club and also women’s revolutionary organization Chhatri Sangha. At the age of just 21, she stunned everyone by her attempt to assassinate the Bengal Governor Stanley Jackson, in the Convocation Hall of the University of Calcutta using her revolver. She fired five shots but failed. She got arrested and was sentenced to nine years of rigorous imprisonment. She joined Congress party soon after release in 1939 and also participated in Quit India Movement. She married independence activist Jatish Chandra Bhaumik in 1947. After the death of her husband she moved to Rishikesh where she led a lonely life. Her dead body was found in a decomposed state by roadside and it took one month for the police to figure out, who she was. That was the end of one of the glorious chapters of Indian freedom struggle.
