Bimal Patel Biography 
Bimal Patel is an architect from Gujarat with more than three decades of experience in this field. Architecture, urban design and urban planning are his major fields of interests and apart from serving as a professional architect, he is also known as a teacher and researcher. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian Architecture and Planning, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2019. He is also a recipient of The Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He is the son of well-known architect Hasmukh Patel who passed away most recently in 2018.
Dr. Bimal Patel was born on 31 August 1961 in Ahmedabad. He is the son of Hasmukh Patel, a well-known architect of the post-independent era of 20th century. Bimal Patel is currently based in Ahmedabad, where he is busy with his professional life. He was brought up in the same city. He studied at the School of Architecture, Center for Environmental Planning and Technology, CEPT during 1978 – 1984. He worked as an apprentice under German architect Frei Otto in Stuttgart, Germany in 1981. While working there he was exposed a lot to Western Europe culture.
Bimal Patel moved to Berkeley to study at the College of Environmental Design, CED. He also completed M.Arch. and M.C.P degrees followed by PhD in 1995. Patel returned to India in 1990 even while doing his PhD research and joined his father’s architectural firm. He designed a campus for The Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Ahmedabad which won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1992. It was his first experience as an independent architect. Kankaria Lake Development project earned him a lot of accolades.
Bimal Patel founded Environmental Planning Collaborative in 1997. Many of his writings and works have been published in magazines related to construction and architecture. He has conducted a few exhibitions and has given significant contributions to some books published. Currently he serves as the President of CEPT University in Ahmedabad. He is also Chairman of the Board of Governors of the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal.
