Bimal Mitra Biography

Bimal Mitra was a renowned Bengali writer. Shaheb Bibi Golam is his celebrated work which has been made to a feature film by renowned film director, Guru Dutt with the same title. Mitra earned Filmfare nomination for Best Story for the film. The movie was titled Saheb Biwi aur Ghulam which starred Meena Kumari, Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman in the lead roles. The movie was directed by Abrar Alvi. In 2011 a new version of the same movie was made in Hindi, titled Saheb Biwi aur gangster which starred Jimmy Shergill, Mahi Gill and Randeep Hooda in the lead roles. Its sequel was made in the year 2013 titled Saheb Biwi aur gangster returns and both these movies were commercial hits. Yet people love to watch the original classic version of Guru Dutt. The original theme is an outlook of the fall of feudalism in Bengal during British rule.

 

Mujrim Hazir is another popular work of Bimal Mitra. Mrityuheen, Ekak Dasak Shatak, Begum Mary Bishwas, Rajabadal, Pati Param guru, Tomra dujone mile, Gulmohor, Ja debi, Ei Norodeho and Kori Diye Kinlaam are other noted novels. He has also authored some short story collections. Neelnesha, Nimaontrito Indranath, Bonshodhor, Dori, Satashe Srabon, Jenana Sambad, Lojjahoro, Gharonti, Amir o UrboshiAmrutyu, Putul Didi, Ashukaka and Milonanto are among his short story works. He is one of the widely read novelists of India and most of his works have been translated to other languages. He has authored more than 100 books and short stories.

 

He was born in the year 1912. He served in railways in Bilaspur for long years where he worked in Chakradharpur Division in the 1940’s and one of his short novelettes ‘Char Chokher Khela’ is inspired by the Anglo-Indian people living there. He resigned from Indian Railway Services in 1954 at the age of 42 to completely concentrate on to writings. He extensively read world classics. In 1983, his name was listed among the most read readers across the globe by Morque's who's who from Chicago.
