Bikash Roy Biography

Bikash Roy was a noted character artist and director associated with Bengali cinema since 1940s. He was active in the film industry till his death in 1987. Towards the end of his career, though he had bad health he played cameo roles to keep him busy in the industry. He authored two autobiography works - Mone Pore and Aami. He directed a few Bengali movies which include Uttam Kumar starrer Marutirtha Hinglaj, Raja saja etc. Kerry Shaheber Munshi and Debotar Graash were his other directorial ventures. He was an accomplished theatre artist too, most remembered for the successful play - "Nahabat". Jiban-Trishna, Uttar Phalguni, Neel Akaser Niche, Ratnadeep, Chaddabesi, Surjyo Toron, Maruthirtha Hinglaj etc are some of his film roles.

He was born in Kolkata in 1916. He completed graduation and LLB from University of Kolkata though he pursued a career in theatre and movies. He was one of the well-educated actors of Bengali film industry then. Started his film career in the 1940s, he moved to lead hero roles in the 1950s and later switched to character roles. In the comedy film Chhele Kaar in the early 1980s he played the lead role. Though active in the film scene, he gave equal preference to theatre. He was quite active in radio plays on AIR too. Film "42" was his major breakthrough of his film career.

His role as barrister Manish in Uttar Phalguni and funny grandfather-in-law inOgo Bodhu Sundari earned him appreciation. He did similar types of roles later, following its success. He played lead role opposite the leading actress Suchitra Sen in Uttar Phalguni, Sritituku Thaak etc. In Tapan Sinha’s "Andhar Periye" he played the role of a psychological patient while he portrayed a humorous doctor in "Aarohi", made by the same director. He was active in film scene till his death in 1987.
