Bikash Bhattacharjee Biography 
Bikash Bhattacharjee was an Indian artist and painter from the state of Bengal who lived during the period, 21 June 1940 – 18 December 2006. He was a recipient of Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship in 2003. Life of the average middle-class Bengali are depicted in most of his paintings, which earned him accolades also. He used oils, acrylics, water-colours, conté and collage for his creative work. Associated with realism movement in Bengal, some of his well-known works are Fantasy Show, Doll Series, Cupboard, The Visitor and The Trap. He was also a renowned professor who taught arts and paintings in a few art colleges of West Bengal. For his overall contributions towards the field of arts and paintings, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 1988.
Bikash Bhattacharjee was born on 21 June 1940 in Kolkata. He lost his father at the age of 8. After his father’s death he had a deep feeling of insecurity and empathy for the under-privileged, which were well-reflected in his paintings. He completed Diploma in Fine Arts from Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship in 1963 and later taught arts at different colleges. His first solo exhibition was at Kolkata in 1965. Four years later he conducted an exhibition in Paris. In the 1970s and 1980s he conducted exhibitions in many major cities across the globe.
Doll Series in the 1960s, followed by the Durga Series earned him instant success, and he got the stature of a celebrated artist after that. He painted portraits of Tagore, Satyajit Ray, and Samaresh Basu, and many other personalities like Indira Gandhi. Many of his paintings are displayed in several art galleries across India.
