Biju Patnaik Biography

Biju Patnaik was a very influential politician and freedom fighter from Indian state, Odisha. He served as the Chief Minister of Odisha for two terms, first one as third CM in 23 June 1961 – 2 October 1963, and for the last time in 5 March 1990 – 15 March 1995, for a complete term of 5 years. He was one of the most prominent political figures from Odisha since late1950s. He had two sons and one daughter, of whom his second son Naveen Patnaik follows his legacy, and currently serves as the CM of Odisha since 2000, for long 18 years. His daughter Gita Mehta is a leading journalist and English writer, while his son-in-law Gita Mehta is also a leading journalist of the country, who currently serves as editor-in-chief of Alfred A. Knopf and chairman of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group.

Biju Patnaik was born on 5 March 1916 in Cuttack, Orissa, British India. His full name is Bijayananda Patnaik. Lakshminarayan and Ashalata Patnaik are his parents. After his graduation, he trained as a pilot. He joined the Royal Indian Air Force during World War II. He also held special interest in nationalist politics during these years. He was jailed for 2 years for his illegal activities while serving as a pilot. He met with Jawaharlal Nehru during his participation in Indian freedom struggle, and very soon became trusted friends.

Biju Patnaik was awarded the highest civilian honour of Indonesia "Bhumi putra" for his heroic contribution for that country, for rescuing Sultan Sjahrir out on a Dakota. After independence, he became more active in politics. His political ideals were influenced with socialism and federalism, and he has been associated with Janata Party and Janata Dal during his political journey.
