Bibhu Mohapatra Biography

Bibhu Mohapatra is an Indian-American fashion designer and costume designer from Rourkela, Odisha. One of the leading designers of international fashion circle right now, his works have been featured in many leading fashion magazines in India and abroad. His creations have been featured in Gotham Magazine, Vogue, Style.com, DNA, Forbes, Wall Street Journal, Marie Claire, New York Magazine, Time and many more. Bibhu has presented many luxury women’s ready to wear collections, couture and fur under his brand. Bibhu has presented his creations in Mumbai and Delhi apart from foreign cities such as New York and London. Michelle Obama, wife of President of US is one of his major clients.

He was born in Rourkela, Odisha in 1972. He currently resides in New York City. He was introduced to the world of fashion for the first time as a child by his mother, who taught him to use his grandmother’s sewing machine. Since then Bibhu got fascinated with costumes and its creation. He was brought up in India in Indian culture, which gave him a good exposure to different colour themes, crafts and textures usually associated with Indian traditional costumes. Once he took an old sari of his grandmother and made a dress for his sister, which she loved it. It was his first recognition in this field.

Though he studied Economics at college, later he switched to fashion designing. Studying fashion designing at New York was something like a dream comes true. It gave him a good learning experience. His academic studies in economics also helped him as a good tool in the field of business. He worked 10 years at J. Mendel. Later in 2008 he launched his own label and currently owns a successful business career in the field of fashion.

Most recently in 2016 he launched a collection of diamond jewelry in India titled, "Artemis by Bibhu Mohapatra”. Handbags, accessories and fragrances are his future plans. He is also known to be a draper designer. He played a small cameo opposite Big B in Teen Patti, a Bollywood film. Till now he has designed clothes for many leading international stars like Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore, Sienna Miller and Cate Blanchett.
