Bhupinder Singh Of Patiala Biography

Bhupinder Singh of Patiala was a former ruler of the princely state of Patiala, who ruled the state for long 38 years from 1900 to 1938. He is also known for the famous Patiala Necklace, created by the House of Cartier in 1928 by him. It contained 2,930 diamonds including world’s seventh largest diamond, the "De Beers" as its centre piece. Displayed in the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889 this necklace caused huge sensation. The necklace disappeared around 1948 and reappeared in an auction in Geneva in 1982. Its missing parts were obtained at a second-hand jewellery shop in London in 1998 and was bought and restored once again by Cartier, as a replica of the original piece.

 

Bhupinder Singh was born at the Moti Bagh Palace, Patiala in the year 1891. After the death of his father, Maharaja Rajinder Singh he succeeded the throne at the age of 9. Till he reached his 18th birthday, the state was ruled by a Council of Regency. He was given full powers on 3 November 1910 at the age of 18. He has served in military in many countries like France, Belgium, Italy and Palestine during First World War and has assigned the roles of General Staff, Lieutenant-Colonel, Major-General and Honorary Lieutenant-General. He has also served as the chancellor of the Indian Chamber of Princes for 10 years.

 

He married 10 times. Among those 10, 4 sisters were his favourites. Bakhtawar Kaur Sahiba was given the official power of Maharani who presented the famous Patiala necklace to Queen Mary on behalf of the Ladies of India, when she visited India for the first time. It was for the first time a foreign queen visited India. Bhupinder Singh has also served as the captain of Indian cricket team in 1911 and has played 27 first-class matches for India. He founded the State Bank of Patiala in 1917. Captain Amarinder Singh, former chief minister of Punjab is his grandson.
