Bhupesh Baghel Biography

Bhupesh Baghel is an Indian politician from Chhattisgarh. He currently serves as the chief minister of Chhattisgarh, and he sworn in as CM on 17 December 2018. He belongs to Indian National Congress and is the current President of Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee since October 2014. Under his presidency Chhattisgarh Congress won 2018 Chhattisgarh Vidhansabha election by a good majority. He got elected to legislative assembly from Patan assembly seat. A wide known politician from Durg, Chhattisgarh, he is into politics since 1980s. He unsuccessfully contested Parliamentary elections in 2004 from Durg Lok Sabha seat and 2009 from Raipur, both representing INC.

Bhupesh Baghel was born on 23 August 1961 into an agricultural family in Durg, present-day Chhattisgarh. Nand Kumar Baghel and Bindeshwari Baghel are his parents, and Mukteshwari Baghel is his wedded wife. He entered politics in the early 1980s during his early 20s. Well-known politician and parliamentarian Chandulal Chandrakar served as his guru and mentor in his political journey. He became a member of Indian Youth Congress in 1985, and over the years he reached a stature in Congress party within the regional politics. He also served as the Vice President of Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress in the mid-1990s.

He got elected to Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly consecutively for the first time in 1993 from Patan, and retained the seat in 1998 state assembly elections too. He was given the portfolio Public Grievance during his second term as MLA. Chhattisgarh Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel led the Congress team that inflicted the BJP's worst defeat in this set of assembly elections held in 2018, and he was anonymously selected as the leader of the party to lead the government.
