Bhupendranath Datta Biography

Bhupendranath Datta was a noted revolutionary from Bengal who later became a sociologist. He is also known as the younger brother of Swami Vivekananda. He authored several books on Indian culture and the most noted one is ‘Swami Vivekananda, Patriot-prophet’ based on the sociologist views of his elder brother. Baishnaba sahitye samajatattva, Bharatiya samaja-paddhati, Dialectics of Hindu ritualism, Bharatera dvitiya svadhinatara samgrama: Aprakasita rajanitika itihas and Studies in Indian Social Polity are other major works.

 

He was born on 4 September 1880 in Bengal.  He was born to Vishwanath Datta and Bhuvaneshwari Datta and had two elder siblings - Narendranath Datta (Swami Vivekananda) and Mahendranath Datta. His father was an attorney of Calcutta High Court and a mother, a housewife. He studied at Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's Metropolitan Institution, Kolkata. During his youth he joined the revolutionary movement of Bengal, which was associated with Brahmo Samaj and leaders like Keshub Chandra Sen and Debendranath Tagore. He was influenced a lot by the principles and concepts of this organization which includes the eradication of caste system and many other social evils existed in the society in the late 1800s and early 1990s.

 

He also joined Bengal Revolutionary Society to take part in India’s freedom struggle movement and was closely associated with Sri Aurobindo and Barindra Ghosh. In 1906, he became the editor of Jugantar Patrika, known for spreading the revolutionary ideas among Indian citizens. The following year he was arrested and sentenced to one year imprisonment by British and after his release, he moved to US where he completed his post-graduation. He was associated with Ghadar Party of California in those days. Later he returned and joined Indian National Congress and became active in politics.
