Bhavani Iyer Biography

Bhavani Iyer is a journalist who is also known as a scriptwriter. She has co-scripted several Bollywood hits, her debut work being ‘Black’ in 2005, and she co-scripted the work aside the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Prakash Kapadia. She also co-scripted the Indian version tele-series ‘24’, directed by Abhinay Deo. Currently she is working on her novel - Anon. She has also co-scripted ‘Lootera’ aside its director.

 

After graduation in science Bhavani started her career in advertising. She worked as a Trainee Copywriter of iB & W Advertising Company. Then she moved to journalism and worked as editor of film magazine – Star Dust for a while. It was during those days when she decided to start writing. Her grandfather was a Tamil poet, who influenced her a lot. Thus she started off with short stories. She got encouragement from Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap and it helped her to access Bollywood also. The result was Black in 2003. The director gave her a lot of freedom while co-scripting the movie. Later she collaborated with Bhansali for Guzarish in 2010.

 

She co-scripted the highly praised script – Lootera with its director Vikramaditya Motwane. Lootera is inspired by O. Henry's The Last Leaf. The truth is that she is one of the much sought women screenwriters of Bollywood. She was given the DVD of Jessie Nelson's I Am Sam—which turned into Main Aisa Hi Hoon, where Ajay Devgan did the role of a physically challenging person, fighting for his child. The writer says, very often the screenwriter needs to compromise in order to get a good producer for the script.
