Bhargavi Rao Biography

Bhargavi Rao was a Telugu writer, best known as a translator. This renowned writer is best known for translating acclaimed plays of Girish Karnad to Telugu, and she won Kendra Sahitya Academy award for one such works. Girish Karnad’s play, Taledanda, won her the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 1995. Rao is also known for the compilation of 100 best short stories written by Indian women writers of 20th century, and she published this translation work titled Noorella Panta. She has been a college professor, and she was a poetess too.

 

She was born on 14 August 1944 in Bellary, Madras Presidency, British India. Now her birth place belongs to Karnataka region. She was born as the eldest of 5 kids to Santhy and Narahari Rao. She has worked as a child artist in a couple of movies and has also worked as a voice actor for radio plays during her childhood. She got married to Prabhanjan Rao. She completed her higher studies in Osmania University including doctorate and then taught English at Osmania University. She has also taught at a few colleges of south India before. She retired from teaching profession in 2004 from Osmania University.

 

After marriage she settled in Tirupati with her husband and had three daughters. In 1977 she got settled in Hyderabad and lived there till the end of her life. She has penned poems and short stories apart from Translation works. Gundelo thadi, Chukka Navvindi and NaaPeru are her short story collections. Album and Needala Godalu are her anthology of poems. She died of heart attack in 2008. "Putra Kameshti" was her last work.
