Bharati Achrekar Biography

Bharati Achrekar is an Indian film and television actress, best known for playing character roles. She is a renowned theater artist too, and is active in both Marathi and Hindi entertainment industry.  She got initial fame playing the female lead Mrs. Wagle in the very popular comedy series of Doordarshan in the 1980s, Wagle ki Duniya. The show gave her a lot of recognition and love from television audience, and initial success in the field as well. She is the daughter of renowned Hindustani singer, Manik Varma, Padma Shri winner.

 

This veteran actress hails from Maharashtra. She was born on October 15, 1959. She started her acting career with theatre, and then moved to films and TV shows since 1980s. She marked her film debut with 1980 Bollywood film, Apne Paraye, playing the supporting role of Naintara. She then appeared in 1982 Braj Bhasha film (a dialect of Hindi), Brij Bhoomi. In 1985 she appeared in commercial hit film, Sanjog. Her role as Lalitha, the sister-in-law of Jeetendra got noticed. Sur Sangam, Chameli ki Shaadi, Eshwar, Beta etc a few more releases, before she took a break from films. In year 2000, she returned to films.

 

Though she appeared in a few roles of 1980s, the role which earned her initial recognition was Mrs. Wagle in the iconic comedy sitcom of Doordarshan in the 1980s, Wagle ki Duniya. She played female lead opposite Anjan Srivastav, and became household name among Indian TV audience. The sitcom telling the issues of common middle-class Indian man was warmly welcomed by Indian TV viewers too. The show was later revived as Wagle Ki Nayi Duniya. She has been featured in many TV ads, and a few Marathi films and TV shows.
