Bharathi Kannan Biography

Bharathi Kannan is a Tamil film director, quite active in the film scene in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Kannan is quite noted for his work on low budget mythological films during this period. Started his film journey in 1981 as an assistant director, his promotion to film direction happened through the film - Aruva Velu in 1996. He has been quite active in television scene as an actor of soaps and was last seen in Kayal (2014), Rajakumari (2013) etc. Kannathal, Sri Raja Rajeshwari, Sri Bannari Amman etc are his noted mythological films. But he has received negative reviews from critics for its technical aspects.

He was born in Tirunelveli on June 1, 1962. He started his career in 1981 as the assistant director to Nellai Sunderrajan. He worked in the south Indian film industry as an assistant director for long 15 years and made his first film - Aruva Velu in 1996. During these 15 years, he played bit roles and character roles on screen occasionally and one of such noted roles was Nethiyadi and Jadikketha Moodi (1989). He also worked in serials for a period, while he was looking for a producer for his film script. His debut movie, a Tamil drama starred Nassar, Urvashi, Anandaraj and Rajesh in lead roles and it told the story of a person, Velu sentenced to death penalty. The movie received mixed reviews from critics.

Then he directed his second film, Kannathal. With this movie he switched on to mythological theme. The lead role was played by actress Neena, who played childhood role of Anju in Keledi kanmani. Thirunelveli was drama with a social message and starred Prabhu and Roja in the lead roles. After a couple of movies, with bad response from critics, he switched on to acting in TV serials. Karagattakari was his last work as a film director.
