Bharat Gupt Biography

Bharat Gupt is a former Associate Professor in English at the College of Vocational Studies of the University of Delhi. A multifaceted personality he is deeply interested in Indian classical music and instruments, also known to be a classicist, theatre theorist, Musician and musicologist. He plays music instruments - sitar and surbahar, and publishes columns regularly in different journals. Gupt is also a cultural analyst. He is married to Yukti since 1976, and the couple had two sons: Abhinav and Udayan.

 

Bharat Gupt was born on 28 November 1946 in Moradabad of Uttar Pradesh. In the 1950s his family shifted to Delhi, where he continued with his studies. In the late 1960s, he moved to Toronto to pursue his higher education. He completed his Master’s degree in Toronto and returned back to India. After that he learnt several musical instruments. He trained for eight years under Pandit Uma Shankar Mishra. He continued with his study on music under K.C. Brihaspati and Swami Kripalvananda. He learnt old classics, yoga sutras and Indian music under the guidance of both.

 

He conducted research works as Senior Fellow of the Onassis Foundation in Greece on revival of ancient Greek theatre. He has exclusively worked on classical studies, theatre, music, culture and media. He worked as an English professor for many years and retired as Associate Professor of English at College of Vocational Studies, University of Delhi. Currently he is a visiting professor of NSD, New Delhi. Since mid-1990s he has conducted exclusive tours and has given lectures and seminars on the subjects of theater and music in India and abroad. He also publishes his research works on various journals.

 

His first book, "Dramatic Concepts - Greek and Indian” was published in 1996. Natyashastra, Chapter 28: Ancient Scales of Indian Music (1996), India: A Cultural Decline or Revival? (2008) and Literary Criticism and Theory (Greek) (2001) are other published books, apart from numerous articles.
