Bharago Biography

Bharago was a humour writer of Telugu literature. His real name is Bhamidipati Ramagopalam. He authored short stories, critiques and popular novels. He received Kendra Sahitya Academy Award in 1991 for the book Itlu mee vidheyudu. He received Best humour writer award of Telugu University in the year 1990. Kurella Sahithi Award (1994) and Kalasagara Award (1997) are the major honours received by him. Most of his short stories had humour as the main flavour. ‘Aaramagopalam’ and Translation of the biography of Ashutosh Mukherjee are his biographical works. His short stories have been adapted to Doordarshan television series.

 

Bhamidipati Ramagopalam was born on 6 February 1932 in Pushpagiri, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. He was the eldest son of Bhamidipati Suryanarayana and Suramma. He graduated in B.A. Economics from M.R. Degree College, Vizianagaram in 1951. Then he joined for a temporary assignment as a checker at the Census Sorting and Tabulation office in 1951. Later he served as a clerk, surveyor, head-surveyor and district surveyor of the Department of A.P. Survey, Settlement and Land Records. He worked as deputy surveyor of Visakapatnam Port Trust for about 16 years, and retired in 1990.

 

He served as the assistant Editor of Andhra Jyothi Weekly for a year. He started writing at a young age and published his first short story in school magazine in 1947 when he was 15. Over the years he established himself as a versatile writer. He authored 160 stories, 3 novels, 50 essays and over 1000 articles in Telugu and 50 in English. His English columns were published in the section ‘News and views on cultural matters' of Swatantra English weekly. Kundapenkulu (1961), Sparsa Rekha (1984) and Nakee Udyogam Vaddu (1988) were his published novels.
