Bhappi Sonie Biography

Bhappi Sonie was a popular director, screenwriter and producer of Bollywood in the golden era. Best known for Shammi Kapoor movies, he has directed super hit movies like Brahmachari and Janwar. After assisting Raj Khosle in a series of memorable movies, Ek Phool Char Kaante (1960) starring Sunil Dutt and Waheeda Rehman marked his directorial debut. Nischay was his last release (1992). With O. P. Nayyar’s memorable music the movie starred Karishma Kapoor and Salman Khan in lead roles. He won a nomination at Filmfare Award for Best Film in 1968 for Brahmachari, which gave Shammi Kapoor his first Filmfare award.

 

Bhappi Sonie was born on July 31, 1928. He began his film journey in 1955 assisting Raj Khosle for Milap followed by CID, Kaala Pani and Solva Saal. Dev Anand played lead hero in all these Khosle movies. Sonie also assisted him in writing scripts for these movies. CID and Kaala Pani became milestone movies of Dev Anand’s career. Ek Phool Char Kaante marked his directorial debut. His association with Shammi Kapoor began with his next directorial venture – Janwar released in 1965. They together worked for Brahmachari in 1968 and Jawan Mohabbat and Preetam in 1971 as well. Pyar Hi Pyar starring Dharmendra and Ek Shrimaan Ek Shrimati starring Shashi Kapoor were other releases in 1960s.

 

Sonie very soon launched his production company - Bhappi Sonie Productions and the first movie released under this banner was Tum Haseen Main Jawaan in 1970. The movie starred Dharmendra and Hema Malini in lead roles, and it was one of their earliest movies as a pair. Jheel Ke Us Paar, Kismat Ki Baazi, Bhanwar and Bade Dil Wala are other movies.
