Bhagat Singh Koshyari Biography

Bhagat Singh Koshyari is an Indian politician from Uttarakhand. He was born on 17 June 1942 in Bageshwar, United Provinces, British India. He served as the 2nd Chief Minister of Uttarakhand for a short term of 30 October 2001 – 1 March 2002. He is a parliamentarian too, who got elected to Lok Sabha in 2014 elections from Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar. He serves as a member of Bharatiya Janata Party, who began his political career with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh during early1960s. He has also published two books, Uttaranchal Pradesh Kyun? and Uttaranchal Sangharsh Evam Samadhan. He has worked as a teacher and journalist too.

 

Bhagat Singh Koshyari hails from Bageshwar of Uttarakhand. His education was completed from Almora College affiliated to Agra University, where he took graduation in English. He was quite active as a student’s leader and member of student’s union too, in the early 1960s. Later he represented the Executive Council of Kumaon University in three terms, during 1979-82, 1982–85 and 1988-91. After his studies, he started his career as a teacher and worked for many years. He also owns a journalist career. He worked at Raja Inter College, Raja Ka Rampur and later started Parvat Piyush, a weekly in which he served as managing director.

 

As a member of RSS, he took part in the fights and struggles in the Emergency Period of mid-1970s, for which he was jailed during 1975-1977. He got elected as an MLA to Uttar Pradesh state assembly for the first time in 1997, and was appointed as minister of Energy, Irrigation, Law, and Legislative Affairs in 2000, when Uttaranchal was formed. In 2001, he replaced Nityanand Swami as the chief minister of Uttarakhand.
