Bhabani Bhattacharya was born on 10 November 1906 in Bhagalpur, Bengal Presidency in British India. He completed his Master’s degree in 1931, followed by doctorate in 1934 from the University of London.

During his academic years, he was very much active in literary circles as well as Marxist circles, soon after he got deeply influenced by his professor, Harold Laski. He published many works in magazines during that period. He also developed a friendship with Francis Yeats-Brown, the editor of The Spectator, where he regularly published books.

He also got opportunity to interact with Rabindranath Tagore. As suggested by Tagore and Francis Yeats-Brown, he continued his literary works in English rather than his mother tongue Bengali. After studies he moved back to Kolkata and got married. He also served as a diplomat for his country. He also taught at many universities.
