Bhabananda Deka Biography

Bhabananda Deka was a noted writer from Assam who wrote in Assamese and English. He has published 112 textbooks on economics, literature and political science, and articles from Assam. He is one of the pioneers on subject of Economics and its text books. His Assamese book on Assam Economics was published for the first time in 1961. Bhaorather Bamsa Aru Baliram Pathakar Jivan Kriti, Punyabhoomi Asom (essays collection), Raghuvamsa (adapted story), Manimugdha (poetry), Bhattadev and Sri Sri Damodar Dev (biography works) and Prachin Asomiya Bhakti Sahitya Aru Dhammapada are his published books, except academic text books. Apart from non-fiction works in English, he has also authored Travelogues and some articles in this English.

 

Bhabananda Deka was born to Late Baliram Pathak and Late Sayatri Bala Pathak at Byaskuchi Satra Kamrup district, Assam on August 19, 1929. After graduation in Economics in 1954, he completed post-graduation in the same subject from Gauhati University in 1957. After studies, he returned to his hometown and worked for Bhattadeb Milan Samiti as a secretary. He was instrumental in building of the first Library in Byaskuchi. Deka joined Pragjyotish College in the Economics Department as a Professor in the year 1958 and retured from the same college in 1992 as Principal. In between, he worked as Senior Research Officer in the Language Unit of UPSC, Delhi.

 

He was one of the first Assamese to form Asomiya Sahitya Samaj in Delhi in 1968. Parikshit Hazarika and Upendra Nath Goswami were other two founding members who played a significant role in introducing Assamese Language in MIL Department of Delhi University. Deka was the Founder Principal of Bapuji College in Sarthebari. He has also worked as principal of four other educational institutions of Assam. He was also the President of Kamrup Sahitya Sabha in 1982, the organization with which he has been associated for a long time. His wife Nalini Prava Deka is a writer and their son, Jim Ankan Deka is a musician and documentary film maker.
