Benoyendranath Sen Biography

Benoyendranath Sen- of Keshub Chunder Sen, was a Brahmo activist from Kolkata who lived in the 19th and early 20th century. He was a philosopher of Keshub Chunder Sen’s New Dispensation from Bengal. Pramathalal Sen - his cousin and Mohit Chandra Sen were the rest two Brahmo Samaj activists associated with him. He worked for the strengthening of the organization and also strived to improve relations with other Brahmo groups. He has also authored a few books - The Pilgrim, Lectures and Essays, The Intellectual Ideal, Arati and Gita Adhayan.

 

Benoyendranath Sen was the son of Madhusudan Sen. His mother was the sister of founder of Brahmo Samaj - Keshub Chunder Sen. He was born on 25 September 1868 at Kolkata. He learnt English and western education, as supported by his father. He mastered Western philosophy and graduated with honours in English and philosophy from Scottish Church College in 1888. He also completed Master of Arts in history and philosophy from Calcutta University. After studies, he started his career as a lecturer. He served as a lecturer at different colleges and his lectures were so popular that it drew people from outside too.

 

He was inspired by his uncle, Keshub Chunder Sen since his childhood and for the same reason when he reached youth, he too joined the organization. He worked for the organization aside Pramathalal Sen and Mohit Chandra Sen. They opened a student’s hostel ‘Fraternal Home’ in 1897 which took part in relief activities when a plague struck Kolkata in 1898. He also took classes on Bhagavad Gita at Albert Hall. He died at a comparatively young age of 45 after a prolonged illness.
