Beni Prasad Verma Biography

Beni Prasad Verma is a veteran politician currently associated with Samajwadi Party. Earlier he was associated with Indian National Congress. In the 1990s he was associated with Janata Dal, and has served as a cabinet minister of H. D. Deve Gowda and most recently a cabinet minister under Manmohan Singh. A 5-times parliamentarian representing two parties, he has been elected to Lok Sabha in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009. He rejoined Samajwadi Party in 2016. A prominent politician of state politics, he served as Public Works Department minister of Uttar Pradesh for several years. This leader has invited many controversies in the recent times for the bad remarks he made.

 

He hails from Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. He was born on 11 February 1941. He got married to Malti Devi at an age of 15, and the couple has 5 children. Mohan Lal Verma and Ramkali were his parents. He holds B.A. and LL.B. degrees from Lucknow University, Lucknow. He is interested in playing chess. He is an educationalist too, who established Charan Singh Mahavidyalay at Bardari and Mahanlal Verma Educational Educational Institute in Barabanki.

 

He got involved with state politics in the early 1970s, and got elected to state legislative assembly for the first time in 1974, followed by 1985 and 1991. He served as General-Secretary, Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Uttar Pradesh during 1974-1977. He became the state minister for the first time in 1977 and was given the portfolio - Cane Development and Sugar Industry. Since then he served as a minister for several years in state government before he moved to National level politics in 1996.

 

He was a Minister of Steel in H. D. Deve Gowda’s ministry. After being re-elected to Lok Sabha during 1998, 1999 and 2004, he contested and won as a Congress candidate in 2009 General Assembly elections. He served as Steel Minister in Manmohan Singh Government during 2011-2014. his foul language on Anti-Corruption crusader Anna Hazare, and also addressing former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as "man of low stands" have stirred up a lot of controversies.
